FOLLOW THE CHRISTMAS GLOW: A CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TRAIL ACROSS SINGAPORE

From Orchard Road to Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay, discover how Singapore celebrates Christmas after dark.
Christmas in Singapore is a season of light, togetherness and celebration.
For many people, it is a time to gather with family and friends, share meals, exchange gifts and enjoy the atmosphere that comes with the end of the year. In Singapore, those celebrations take place beneath tropical skies, with the city itself becoming part of the festive experience.
As December approaches, familiar streets and public spaces begin to change. Shopping streets are lined with illuminated decorations, Christmas trees appear in plazas, buildings become backdrops for festive displays and gardens take on a completely different atmosphere after sunset. There is no snow-covered city here. Instead, Christmas in Singapore is experienced through lights, outdoor celebrations, festive installations, music and the energy of the city at night.
The tradition of lighting up the city for Christmas has also been part of Singapore's story for decades. What began with relatively simple street decorations has developed into large-scale displays combining thousands of lights, illuminated structures, Christmas trees, digital effects and immersive light shows.
For visitors, following the Christmas lights is therefore more than finding a good photograph. It is a way to see how different parts of the city take on a festive character after dark.
This trail takes you from Orchard Road to Marina Bay and finally Gardens by the Bay, beginning with Singapore's longest-running Christmas light-up tradition and ending beneath the illuminated Supertrees.
Christmas on A Great Street

Orchard Road is the natural starting point for a Christmas lights trail because its festive tradition goes back to 1984, when the shopping street was decorated with around 100,000 light bulbs. The display was much simpler than what visitors see today. There were no large digital projections or elaborate Christmas villages — just thousands of bulbs bringing a festive atmosphere to one of Singapore's busiest streets. The idea quickly became an annual tradition, and the scale of the decorations grew over the years. By 1998, around 900,000 bulbs were used across Orchard Road, Tanglin and Scotts Road, accompanied by Christmas decorations and a toy-train installation.
Today, the celebration is known as Christmas on A Great Street, the annual Christmas light-up along Orchard Road. Each year, the shopping boulevard is transformed with a new festive theme, combining illuminated decorations, Christmas trees, installations and seasonal activities with the area's shopping and dining attractions.
Rather than being limited to a single event, Christmas on A Great Street turns the entire stretch of Orchard Road into a seasonal experience. The decorations extend along the street, while shopping malls, retail spaces and attractions add their own Christmas activities, giving visitors plenty of reasons to explore along the route.
The celebration has also evolved beyond simply adding more bulbs. Modern displays incorporate projection effects, digital technology, illuminated structures and creative installations, bringing new visual elements to a tradition that has remained part of Orchard Road for more than four decades. The result is a Christmas landscape that changes as you walk — from the quieter Tanglin end through the heart of the shopping district and towards Dhoby Ghaut.

A FOAMY WINTER WONDERLAND AT TANGLIN MALL

Before continuing along Orchard Road, make a stop at Tanglin Mall for a playful start to the Christmas trail. During the festive season, the mall brings a touch of winter to Singapore with its Christmas bubble and snow experience, creating a fun photo opportunity and a distinctly tropical take on a traditional white Christmas.
With Singapore's year-round tropical climate, snow is naturally not part of the local Christmas landscape. The bubble and snow experience offers a playful way to recreate that familiar winter imagery, transforming the festive setting into something that feels both recognizable and distinctly Singaporean.
The experience is especially charming because of the contrast. Instead of cold weather, heavy coats and real snow, visitors get a light-hearted version of a white Christmas surrounded by Singapore's warm climate. The falling bubbles and snow-like effects add movement to the scene, making the festive atmosphere feel more immersive than a traditional Christmas display.
For visitors beginning their Christmas trail from the Tanglin end of Orchard Road, this offers an unexpected introduction to the evening — a little taste of winter before stepping out into one of Singapore's most iconic Christmas streetscapes.
Location: Tanglin Mall, 163 Tanglin Road, Singapore 247933.

A CHRISTMAS MOMENT AT ION ORCHARD

Further along the trail, ION Orchard offers a different perspective on the celebration. Its distinctive glass façade provides a striking backdrop for the seasonal decorations, bringing together Singapore's contemporary architecture and the traditional imagery of Christmas.
Rather than being a destination centred around rides or activities, ION is a place to take in the city itself. The surrounding shops, illuminated interiors and steady flow of people create a distinctly urban backdrop, while the festive touches add warmth to the modern surroundings. As daylight fades, the contrast becomes even more noticeable, with the decorations set against the building's sleek architecture and the evening sky.
This is Christmas in the heart of Singapore — not a winter scene, but a celebration woven into the rhythm of the city. Take a moment to enjoy the view and photographs before continuing along Orchard Road.

With its fairground-like setting in the heart of Orchard Road, it is a particularly enjoyable stop for families and those looking to spend more time at the festivities.
From Ngee Ann City, continue walking east along Orchard Road towards Somerset. The route takes you past more of Orchard's seasonal displays and shopping façades as the surroundings gradually change from the busy retail stretch towards the city centre. Follow the main road until you reach Somerset MRT Station, where you can take the MRT to the next stop on the trail — Marina Bay.

If you want to add another light show to the evening, Spectra – A Light & Water Show takes place at the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza.
Spectra combines water, light, projections and music, but it is a regular Marina Bay Sands show rather than a Christmas installation.
For this trail, treat it as an optional extra rather than a scheduled stop. The priority is to reach Gardens by the Bay in time for a Christmas special.

GARDENS BY THE BAY

The trail takes its final turn into Gardens by the Bay, where Singapore’s Christmas lights leave the busy streets and waterfront behind and unfold across a garden landscape. After the festive energy of Orchard Road and the illuminated skyline of Marina Bay, the Supertrees offer a completely different setting — towering above the gardens and glowing against the night sky, with Christmas installations and seasonal displays bringing the surrounding gardens to life.

Flower Dome Christmas Train Show

Photo Credit: Garden By The Bay
There is more to discover here beyond the Supertrees. During the festive season, the Flower Dome Christmas Train Show transforms the conservatory into a miniature Christmas world. Running from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, from 9am to 9pm, the display takes visitors on a journey through a festive landscape inspired by Santa’s hometown in Finland. Miniature trains wind their way through Christmas trees and poinsettias, passing tiny toy workshops and detailed seasonal scenes that bring the storybook setting to life. The combination of model trains, flowers and Christmas decorations gives the Flower Dome a quieter and more intimate side of the celebrations, away from the larger outdoor light displays. Admission to the Flower Dome applies.
As night falls, the focus naturally shifts outdoors towards Supertree Grove and Christmas Wonderland, where illuminated installations and festive displays fill the gardens. The Christmas atmosphere here feels distinctly different from the earlier stops — instead of Christmas lights lining a shopping street or reflecting across the waterfront, they are woven into the greenery and open spaces of the gardens, with the Supertrees rising above it all.
The evening then builds towards Garden Rhapsody: The Christmas Special, bringing music and light together beneath the Supertrees for the final chapter of the trail.
Location: Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay, 18 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018953.
Nearest MRT station: Bayfront MRT Station (CE1 / DT16). From Exit B, follow the Gardens by the Bay linkway; allow extra time to reach Flower Dome or use the Gardens’ shuttle service.
Christmas wonderland

Make your way towards Supertree Grove and Christmas Wonderland, where the final chapter of the trail begins.
Since its introduction, Christmas Wonderland has become one of Gardens by the Bay’s signature year-end celebrations, transforming the gardens into a festive landscape of illuminated installations, Christmas displays, seasonal activities and larger-than-life decorations. Against the backdrop of the Supertrees, the celebration brings together the magic of Christmas with one of Singapore’s most recognisable modern landmarks.
Arriving around 8.15pm gives you time to wander through the illuminated surroundings, take in the festive installations and capture a few photographs before settling in for the evening’s finale. As the gardens begin to glow after dark, the Supertrees become the centrepiece of the experience, rising above the surrounding lawns and pathways and creating a dramatic setting for the Christmas lights.
The atmosphere here is a world away from the earlier stops on the trail. Orchard Road brings Christmas into the heart of Singapore’s shopping district, surrounded by bustling streets, storefronts and city lights, while Marina Bay places the celebrations against the waterfront and skyline. At Gardens by the Bay, the lights are woven into a garden landscape, surrounded by greenery, open spaces and the towering Supertrees.
Stay on at Supertree Grove for Garden Rhapsody: The Christmas Special, where music and changing lights bring the evening to its festive finale. As the Supertrees illuminate the night sky to Christmas classics, the gardens become a place to slow down, look up and take in the season — a fitting final stop after following Singapore’s Christmas glow from the city streets to the waterfront and finally into the gardens.
Location: Supertree Grove & Meadow, Gardens by the Bay, 18 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018953.
Date: 27 Nov 2026 - Sun, 3 Jan 2027
Time: 6.30pm - 11.00pm (Last admission at 10.15pm)

garden rhapsody: Christmas special

Photo Credit: Garden By The Bay
During the Christmas season, the Supertrees become the stage for Garden Rhapsody: The Christmas Special, bringing together music, light and the festive atmosphere of Christmas Wonderland. Running from 29 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, the Christmas edition sees the Supertrees illuminated to favourite Christmas classics, with highlights sung by local artists. Shows take place at 7.45pm and 8.45pm, allowing visitors to experience the spectacle as part of an evening in the gardens.
Garden Rhapsody has been a defining part of the Gardens by the Bay experience since 2015. Its creative vision is led by lighting designer Adrian Tan and composer and arranger Bang Wenfu, with the show designed to surround audiences with both sound and light. Rather than simply watching the Supertrees from a distance, visitors experience the performance from within the grove, where 68 independent audio speakers are positioned to create the impression of musicians performing from different points around the audience. As the music fills the grove, the Supertrees change with the rhythm, turning the surrounding garden into an immersive evening performance.
For the Christmas Special, this atmosphere takes on an especially festive character as familiar Christmas music fills the grove and the Supertrees come alive above the gardens. Find a comfortable spot with a clear view of several Supertrees and stay for the full performance, taking in the lights, music and scale of the grove around you. Afterwards, there is still time to wander through the surrounding Christmas installations and enjoy the gardens at night before making your way home.
After following the Christmas glow from the illuminated streets of Orchard Road, through the waterfront lights of Marina Bay and into the gardens, Garden Rhapsody brings the journey to a fitting close — beneath Singapore’s iconic Supertrees, surrounded by music, light and the spirit of the season.
Location: Supertree Grove, Gardens by the Bay, 18 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018953.

EXPERIENCE CHRISTMAS AFTER DARK
As the evening unfolds, Christmas takes on a different character at every stop, turning the journey from Orchard Road to Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay into one continuous celebration of light. It begins among the bright streets and festive energy of Orchard Road, where a Christmas tradition that started with thousands of simple bulbs has grown into one of Singapore’s most anticipated annual light-ups. From there, the trail moves towards Marina Bay, where the illuminated skyline, waterfront and reflections across the bay create a completely different backdrop as night falls.
The journey ends at Gardens by the Bay, where the city gives way to greenery, glowing installations and towering Supertrees. Here, Christmas feels less like a light-up along a street and more like an experience to pause and take in, especially as the evening culminates in the music and lights of the 8.45pm Christmas Special.
The magic of the trail lies in watching Singapore transform as the sun goes down — from the festive buzz of the shopping streets, to the glow of the waterfront, and finally to a garden illuminated for the season. Start before sunset, make your way through the city as night sets in, and end the evening surrounded by light, music and the Christmas spirit.
