singapore river
Once the centre of Singapore’s early trading industry, the river played a major role in the country’s development as merchants, bumboats and warehouses lined its banks during the colonial era.
Today, the area has transformed into a vibrant waterfront destination filled with restaurants, nightlife, cultural attractions and scenic walking routes.
Stretching through districts such as Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay, the Singapore River offers different experiences along its waterfront. Boat Quay is known for its riverside dining and historic shophouses, while Clarke Quay is one of Singapore’s busiest nightlife and entertainment districts, filled with bars, clubs, restaurants and live music venues. Robertson Quay offers a quieter atmosphere with cafés, boutique dining spots and scenic riverside views.

The river is also home to several iconic landmarks and bridges, including the historic Cavenagh Bridge and the famous Merlion Park near the mouth of the river, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Marina Bay and the city skyline.
One of the most popular ways to explore the area is through a river cruise aboard traditional bumboats, offering visitors a scenic journey past Singapore’s historic waterfront and modern skyscrapers. In the evenings, the river becomes especially lively as restaurants and bars light up the promenade, creating a vibrant atmosphere along the water.
Combining history, dining, nightlife and scenic city views, the Singapore River remains one of the city’s most iconic and atmospheric destinations, offering visitors a glimpse into both Singapore’s past and present.
Getting to Singapore River is convenient via several MRT stations including Clarke Quay MRT Station, Raffles Place MRT Station and Fort Canning MRT Station, all located within walking distance of different sections of the waterfront.
